Aires Tropicales for Woodwind Quintet

Aires Tropicales for woodwind quintet was composed by Latin clarinet extraordinaire Paquito D'Rivera for the Aspen Wind Quintet. Aires Tropicales begins with Alborado, a slow introduction followed by the Son with an ostinato Latin bass line in the bassoon and horn. Habanera is a trio movement for flute, clarinet and basoon; Vals Venezalano is a lively Venezuelan waltz; Dizzyness is an homage to the late Dizzy Gillespie; Contradanza is an upbeat Cuban dance and Afro, which begins with a flute solo, is followed by an energetic, rhythmic six-eight dance over an African ostinato.
