The OXtet is the jazz-rock-funk ensemble led by multi-instrumentalist Josh Oxford. On this self-titled CD, Oxford draws on a variety of influences with ten original works, including 12-tone theory inspired by Schoenberg, to create his original compositions. Oxford says, "I feel like hearing every single note in succession does something subliminally. It gets mathematical, with a matrix of possibilities, but I try to make it feel intuitive." These tunes do have hooks and catchy rhythms that make for a rewarding listen.
Members of The OXtet include James Covington (lead trumpet), Andrew Sickmeier (marimba, vibraphone, percussion), Thee Ox (leadership), Andre Baruch (tenor and soprano saxophones), Mike Lamardo (drums), Dillon Kondor (electric guitar), Nikola Tomic (trumpet "gymnastics and solos"), Steve Reichlen (acoustic and electric drums) and Dom Fisher (electric bass).
